From Game Reviews to a Publishing Empire: Classic Game Room 2085 Visits from the Future
Mark Bussler, writer of the Ultra Massive Video Game Console Guide series, Retro Noir, and creator of Classic Game Room 2085, talks about staying one step ahead of change on the Internet to succeed. When a decade-old YouTube channel was about to sink, Mark went to the future to find inspiration and found new ways to challenge conventions in the self-publishing realm.
Classic Game Room may be best known for reviewing old games and talking about Vectrex, but over the past few years Mark confronted a changing landscape filled with content over saturation and a generational shift to live-streaming. Rather than playing their game, CGR became one of the most prolific publishing houses for video game guide books, historical books, comics, custom art and more.
In 2018, Mark launched a t-shirt line on Amazon called Turbo Volcano which surpassed his 11-year-old-Youtube channel in two months. Change on the Internet comes swiftly, so thankfully Mark is from the future and has experience fighting space bees with laser chainsaws. It’s not all fun and games though, listen to Mark make fun of himself and probably fall off the stage.
